for the period extending from February 17 to August 9, 1901, and covering the period of his trip to Arkansas. The article closes with Ormie's return to his Missouri home, but his connection with Missouri farm the same year and returned to Arkansas. Buying a farm near Acorn, six miles north of Mena, they settled down and lived there the rest of their lives. Ormie died in 1913 and Gene in 1935. They are buried in Owen'šs Chapel Cemetery at Acorn.

Before he died Gene willed the Twiford farm and his personal property to R. H. McMillan, a neighbor and friend, now of Panama, Oklahoma. Among the personal effects of Gene was the soiled, cloth-bound manuscript journal kept by Ormie from May, 1899 until June, 1902. Harold Coogan, a relative of R. H. McMillan and now a history teacher in Lewisville High School, brought the journal to the University of Arkansas while he was a student there in 1960-1961. A microfilm copy of the journal has been placed in the Arkansas Collection of the University Library.

In preparing the manuscript for publication the editor has reproduced the journal exactly as Ormie wrote it except to add occasional punctuation marks or to interpose words in brackets as an aid to clarifying cloudy passages. The spelling is Ormie's, and all words and phases enclosed the parentheses are his also. The editor wishes to thank Harold Coogan of Lewisville, Mrs. Dorothy Ann Stevenson of Cove, and Miss Brenda Barham and her farther, Richard Barham, of Mena for their many kindness in helping with the editing of this journal.
