____________________________Creating
and Using Web Interactive Databases
The World Wide Web
What is it?
Suppose you fell asleep in 1980 and woke up today, would
you be surprised?
The Web is part of the Internet, a network of networks
that is growing at warp speed.
The Web is a very efficient way of distributing
information.
The Web can be a very efficient way of interacting with
others over the Internet. Often, it is not efficient,
however.
The Fairmont Hotel in New Orleans had a Web page in
1998, but did not use it well for booking
reservations.
Static Pages
Static pages are just that, static, they do not
change.
Most Web pages are static.
For information that does not change quickly or often,
static pages are best. For example, a page describing
Leonardo's motivation for painting the Mona Lisa would
probably be a good candidate for a static page.
Dynamic Pages
Dynamic pages change.
Dynamic pages are the result of an on-the-fly conversion
of a database into an HTML file.
Dynamic pages are best for information that is
constantly updated because only the database need be
changed. Price lists, library catalogs, and inventory are
all good candidates for dynamic pages.
