Augmented Reality

Pokemon Go was one of the first popular augmented reality apps for smartphones. Since then, augmented reality applications have proliferated. We will demonstrate some in class today. We will also discuss the potential for this kind of cognitive science for the future.

Definition of Augmented Reality

• Superimposing computer generated images onto user's views of the real world, thus creating a composite image.

Analysis

• VR puts the user in a completely digital environment (and can be dangerous, (e.g., running into a wall).
• AR puts digital content on top of real world images using a variety of devices (e.g., glasses, tablets, smartphones)
• Mixed Reality (MR) combines multiple technologies (sensors, advance optics, and massive computer power) to insert virtual content into the real world in precise locations. In addition, it allows users to interact with that digital content in a realistic manner.

Examples: All were recently downloaded to my iPhone. We will demo them in class.

  • Lets users place "virtual tattoos" on their bodies to preview how they will look.
• Theodolite
  • Provides GPS, rangefinding, compass, inclinometer, and more geospatial information
• CarFinder
  • Solves the age-old problem of remembering where you left your car.
• SpotCrime
  • Provides information about crimes near any location. Information is downloaded from police files.
