Student Evaluations

Spring 1998

Web-based teaching is a good way to teach for the simple fact that it gives students a chance to learn other than out of a textbook. This is helpful because it means one less book to buy. Students also have 24-hour access to the information needed and in the process learn how to create a web page of his own. All this course/professor is really asking for is some student time and effort--nothing more, nothing less. The take-home test are also a plus in this course because not only do you have a lot of time to work on your test, but you also have access to the previous year's information. Last, in doing research for the topics assigned in the class, a student can never say there was not enough information.

Dear Students of Fall 1998,

Be prepared to have the semester of your life. The next few months will change your thinking about Cognitive Science. Dr. Kardas will have you searching the internet to gain information threw technology. Don't be afraid of his class he will help you through any problem that may occur. Don't put your work off to the last minute things are not as hard as they sound. Make sure you come to class to receive handouts. Even though we didn't have a book for class I have learned more threw experience than anything else.

I personally believe that this course is preparing us for the new wave of technology that Universities will be seeing from now on. This class "forced" me to learn more about computers. Before taking this course, I falsely believed that I knew "enough" about computers to get by. I was wrong. Now, I can successfully navigate through the Internet, and I can successfully use a search engine. Before, I just "played" around, not knowing what I was doing. I also believe that Cognitive Science is an interesting, valuable science that society will be seeing a lot more of. I feel that SAU is lucky to be able to offer the course. This was, by far, one of my favorite classes this semester, and I highly recommend it, even to a computer novice.

Thanks for all the help in Cognitive Science. This class really help me out because of this major experience that was givin to me. When you first told the class that we were going to have to do a web page, I thought to myself I better hurry up and drop this class, but you made this class worth the change and man! Am I glad that I did take the risk. I have enjoyed your class so much that I even recommended it to a few of my closest friends. I just want to say thanks for all the help because I know that I was a major pain in the ass. Bottom line, is that the class did help me socially because of the web page assignment.

The best part of this class is that students do lectures with the web page they make spending a whole class time. You learn a lot of how to make a web-site and the subject you researched for the presentation. On the other hand, the times students did presentations were not exciting. Audiences (other students) could hardly catch up the presentations, thus could hardly come up with interesting questions about it because many times they didn't even have any clue of what was gonna be talked about. I think improvement can be made by reviewing very basic of the topics by the hands of intructor at the first month of classes. By doing so, students will enjoy the presentations more.

Cognitive science is a fun course. The course itself is not very difficult at all however, the test are very time consuming. Dr. Kardas is always willing to answer any questions at any time. I asked him a question via e-mail while he was in New Orleans and he replied very quickly. Most times examples given during class are posted on the e-mail. This alows you to easily keep up with all events occuring during class. The group presentation projects are very helpful in the learning of CS. They allow students to teach a certain part of cs and in the process learn what they are teaching very thouroughly. Over all I believe Dr. Kardas's teaching style to be very effective and complete.

This class gives the student a brief understanding of what goes into designing a web page. I think a more hands on approach would be nice for this class. You do get some experience but I think more forced hands on would be better. I enjoyed the class itself and all of the lectures from the students. I feel that I did acquire a little more knowledge about the computer than I previously had. It was a nice experience. Thanks Dr. Kardas for a nice class.

I found this class to be very interesting and I feel that I learned quite a lot from it. Before this class, I had spend quite a lot of time on the internet and I felt comfortable in using it. I learned a lot from this class about the net that I didn't know (I didn't realize that I knew so little about it)!! I enjoyed, as with all of Dr. Kardas' classes, the fact that this class was so "laid back". I also enjoyed the fact that I could access most of the information from home, this made it much easier to complete the tests. This brings me to the only problem that I see with the course...I feel that this course would have been really time consuming if I hadn't had internet access at my house. I would have hated to sit at the computer lab, as many hours as I spent sitting at my computer at home, trying to complete the tests.

Bullock

Overall I really enjoyed this course. Most of the topics we covered in Cognitive Science turned out to be pretty interesting. Using the Internet as a teaching tool was a welcome change from sitting in on the usual lectures. Having the take-home tests gives you the opportunity to look up the material whenever it is convenient, and having to search the 'Net' for the information allows you to learn more about the subject. It would be helpful to hold class in a place where each student had access to a computer for some hands on learning, especially during the first couple weeks of the class.

Rhodes

Cognitive Science is not too bad. If you dislike spending endless hours searching on the internet, stay far, far away!

USING THE INTERNET IS SUCH A VALUE TOOL. COGNITIVE SCIENCE OS A VERY IN DEPTH COURSE THAT A; STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE WHETHER HE/SHE MAY NEED THE CLASS FOR THEIR MAJOR OR JUST ANOTHER ELECTIVE. DR. KARDAS HAS BEEN AT THE FORE FRONT OF THE KNOWLEDGE GIVEN TO THE STUDENTS IN HIS PSYCHOLOGY CLASSES. DR. KARDAS MAKES A BORING SUBJECT INTO ONE OF GREAT INTEREST AND IMPORTANCE. DR. KARDAS IS THE TYPE OF PROFESSOR WHO MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN BETWEEN THE USUAL LECTURE(NOTE TAKING) AND THE NEW IMPROVED METHOD OF TEACHING THROUGH THE INTERNET. OBVIOUSLY, THE INTERNET IS THE FUTURE. DR. KARDAS IS LEADING THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY INTO AND BEYOND THE INTERNET AGE. COGNITIVE SCIENCE IS A COURSE THAT SHOULD DEFINITELY BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

This class was very informative and interesting. I enjoyed the class and was thrilled that it would count as one of my science classes. I feel this class was more valuable to me than another science class, such as Chemistry, because it deals with new technology as well as cognitive processes. A possible change for the course would be to have the class read the web sites created by the other students and not have presentations.

Crawford, T.

I believe that the Web-based teaching is a great idea, because it opens up new ways of teaching and new ways of learning not just for the student but also for the teacher. The Web is there 24 hours a day at ones finger tips. I felt that I was going to have hard time in this class but even a baby could use the Web the way Dr. Kardas shows it. So now I know how to use the Web and understand a lot more about it.

Crawford, S.

I really learned a lot in this course, the main thing being that I can create a Web Page. I think maybe the wohle class should have several lessons on how to use Claris Home Page and how to establish links before beginning their own page. It was interesting to see all the subjects connected to Cognitive Science and to hear the various presentations. It gave me more confidence in use of the computer and the world wide web for research and easy access to lots of various information. I also learned it takes a lot of time and effort to create a web page and that there is a lot more to it than you would think when you just browse through the various settings.

Ross

I really enjoyed learning about the different topics covered in CS such as intelligent agents, encryption, and how to the computer aides us in psychology. I think the class is a good idea for psychology majors. I would suggest that if at all possible maybe some of the topics discussed in class could be done in the computer lab so that everyone could have a chance to do the whatever we are discussing in class and can ask questions while Dr. Kardas in there to answer them.

Shutes

I really enjoyed learning how to use and create a web page. I like the concept of speaking before the class to teach someone else, what I learned. It was like performing before audience of interested peers who thought I was so clever. I felt clever. My subject was very interesting to class and since I chose it, I wanted to do in the first place. There are no improvements to be made in this class, keep up the hands on experince, that is needed to create a web page.

Hershberger

I enjoyed the Cognitive science class quite a bit. I was happy to be able to write a web page, and after i saw how simple it was, i went to tripod. com to write my own page. (which can be located at http://members.tripod.com/~Phuzzy_Nathan/").

This class has clearly evolved in a positive direction from its start. There have been many changes to it, but most have been needed from what I understand. As all of Dr. Kardas' classes are organized this one is set up to inspire thought. You can't just sit there and expect to learn anything. This is definitely not a "poke and puke" class by any means. The projects of building a group webpage were a good idea. The search that Dr. Kardas has created is helpful as well. There should be, however, a clearer idea of what is expected and taught in the class. Everyone knows that this is the class "where you build webpages", but they shouldn't get caught up in all the special effects and forget the learning process. I learned a lot about the connection between psychological thought and the applications that can be made to computers because I already knew how to build a webpage. Dr. Kardas has made it as easy as possible to build the actual page, so don't worry about that. Look for what he wants you to learn. That's the key!
