Walz History Essay Competition

The Walz History Essay Competition, established to honor the late Dr. Robert B. Walz, distinguished professor emeritus of the department, awards annually cash prizes to as many as ten junior high and senior high students and as grand prize a four-year, tuition scholarship to one senior to attend SAU. The first competition occurred during the 1995-96 school year. Those with winning history essays are invited to attend the annual departmental banquet for special recognition.

1995-96 Walz Prize Awards:

• Walz Scholar Award-- Donnie McKnight, Airline High School, "Stands in Racism."
• Senior Paper Award-- Nathan Watt, Magnolia High School, "The Civil War and Newspapers: A Free Press for a Free Nation."
• Junior High Paper Award -- Andrew Bratcher, Barton Middle School, "Explorers of America: Maryland and Lord Baltimore."
• Junior High Paper Award -- Jeff Alphin, Barton Middle School, "Explorers in America: The Puritans and Separatists."
